A new compact cousin for M-B’s CLS 63 AMG, the CLA 45 AMG four door coupe, is powered by the same 265kW/450Nm 2.0 – litre turbo four, and features the same 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system as its A 45 AMG hatchback twin.
Benz claims the 1991cc unit is the world’s most powerful four cylinder series production turbo engine, and matched with seven-speed DSG ‘box is claimed to propel the five seater from 0-100km/h in 4.6 sec, and on to an electronically limited Vmax of 250km/h.
The standard sport exhaust system features large pipe cross-sections and an active exhaust flap for optimal flow and back pressure.
The CLA 45 borrows heavily from SLS AMG parts catalogue for its cooling system, with a low temp circuit controlling charge air cooling, and with supplementary cooler located in the wheel arch.
The speedshift box features three driving programs, double declutch rev-matching on down changes, and a Race Start launch mode. An electrohydraulically controlled multi disc clutch is integral to the rear diff, with front to rear torque split infinitely variable up to a maximum of 50:50.
The CLA 45 shares the A 45’s suspension upgrades which include revised springs, dampers, and anti roll bars, among other changes.
Bigger vented and drilled brakes (350mm front/330mm rear) are standard, as is 235/35 Dunlop sport Maxx rubber on 19×8-inch alloys.
